Congresswoman Nita Lowey today issued the following statement regarding the Republican Party’s official platform, which calls for a Constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest:
“Even as the national GOP trips over itself to denounce Rep. Todd Akin’s statement that survivors of rape – like all other women – should be denied the right to make their own health care decisions, the national Republican party's official platform embraces this very idea.
“It seems as though the national GOP leaders who called on Mr. Akin to withdraw from his Senate race don’t object to his views about reproductive choice itself, only the blunt way he expressed them.
“For American women, the stakes of this election could not be higher. I will always stand by the rights of women to make their own health care decisions without government interference, and I will never stop fighting for this bedrock principle.”
